What is the I/O MUG Mail List?

I/O MUG hosts this list to invite the free and open discussion of Macintosh issues. This list is intended to be a forum to discuss general Macintosh use.

What does that include?

Anything you can think of (tools, hints & tips, exchanging of knowledge and experience, suggestions to solve problems, compatibility issues) to make Macs run better.

Do's:

  • Discuss Macintosh problems and/or workarounds, how to, what to, why to, type questions.

  • Discuss third-party Macintosh products.

  • In short: ON TOPIC, LOW NOISE, and FRIENDLY!

Don'ts:

  • Discuss off topic issues. Use personal email or other available lists.

  • Post large articles to the list, web pages were made for that. Send a link with the URL!

  • Generate noise, voice your upset, flame, or make inflammatory remarks. Save that for offline or better yet, do not do it at all.

I/O MUG reserves the right to now and then make the list aware of a new products. We allow Vendor involvement in the list. Vendors are requested to not blatantly promote products. If vendors don't address the issue in a technical fashion their subscription will be revoked. Any participant flaming another will be removed from the list at the owner's discretion. The next time their email address and/or domain will be banned from the list.

As you see, this gives you a very wide range of topics to discuss in a friendly environment. I/O MUG hopes that the list proves useful to you and your organization.   Having to pay to get a problem fixed is no fun. Why can't I Unsubscribe?

99 times out of 100 the reason you cannot unsubscribe is because your email address has changed. You may not even know that it has changed because there are several fields in an email message that tell where the message is coming from. Some of these are typically not controlled by the client but instead by the mail gateway that's sending the message out. You may be joe@foo.com,but your message may appear as coming from joe@server.foo.com. If your mail administrator has made changes to your environment (which you may not be aware of) your messages may now be coming from joe@anotherserver.foo.com and hence we do not recognize that address as being subscribed (and therefore your request to unsubscribe fails).

The way to solve this problem is to visit Yahoo! Groups and check your subscription settings. If you still have problems, visit http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/egroups/cgi_feedback and submit a question to Yahoo! Groups. Still having problems? Send an email to iomug-owner@yahoogroups.com and we assist you.

THE I/O MUG LIST IS NOT MODERATED. IN CASE MODERATION IS NEEDED, THESE WILL BE THE RULES FOLLOWED. PLEASE MODERATE YOURSELF.

Why was my post was rejected?
Your message might have been rejected because:

  1. Off Topic
Messages are considered off-topic if they don't directly relate to a Macintosh issue.

  2. Too many quoted messages
Bandwidth should not be wasted, it's too precious. If you are going to include a previous message in your reply, you should make sure you are quoting only as much of it as is absolutely necessary. We have a policy which states that if the quoted material exceeds your reply content, and isn't absolutely necessary to understand your reply, the message gets rejected (regardless of how valuable it might be). I want you to re-submit it, but trim out the unnecessary quoted material. Everyone will likely have seen the message you are responding to anyway, and those that haven't can easily check the on-line web archives.

  3. Repeat
Your message is a repeat of information that's recently been discussed on the list, or should be obvious to most people. People should be referred to the archives if the topic/issue/point was recently discussed.

  4. Inflammatory
All messages to the list must use a professional business tone. The list is not a playground for children to shout derogatory statements back and forth. Comments of a religious nature (i.e. Mac vs. Windows) will not be tolerated unless they provide constructive comparisons As most of you will appreciate, it's far too easy to allow the content to degrade into an us vs. them type battle.

When there's too much noise on the list!

Despite our regular admonitions, there's always going to be people posting OFF TOPIC stuff. Please send them a friendly personal email requesting to stay On Topic. If that does not help, send an email to iomug@iomug.org and we'll monitor the person to see if this is repeating. If so a second warning will be issued. If that does not work, they will be banned. All this being reasonable and rational.
